Two weeks have passed since my return to hometown. I have been enjoying the company of my friends and slacking off on finding a job. Honestly, I am not sorry at all!
I had a job interview in Croatia’s capital city, Zagreb a few days ago and I had visited book fair “Interliber”. I was surprised by cheap prices of books and after a while of looking around the piles and piles of books, one title caught my eye. If you’ve read my previous blog post, you know it’s Nick Vujicic’s book “Life without limits”. I was inspired by this couragoues, remarkable man, learning about his life has helped me appreciate more what I have instead of complaining about what I do’t have.
I leave you with a photo below, that was taken a while ago on Labour day. Everybody in the city grills veggies and meat on that day, which is why there is a lot fo smoke on the water.

Have a great day!
Today I want to write about a man, who is an inspiration to all of us and a proof that all the obstacles we face can be overcome. He was born without limbs and two slightly malformed feet. His classmates called him “alien” but he overcame his disabilities and became successful. He has poured his heart into spreading the message of unlocking personal happiness and that way helped many people realize the happiness is achievable. “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” – this man travelled all around the world. He is a proud father of a bright young boy and a husband of a beautiful woman. The person I’m talking about is “hiding” behind the name of Nick Vujicic. He was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1982 to Dušanka and Borislav Vujičić, Serbian immigrants from Yugoslavia. Although I stumbled upon one of his speeches on Youtube few years ago, I bought his book “Life without limits” just recently.
Give me a hug!
When he was younger, he often blamed God for the life without extremities. When he was 10, he decided to commit suicide in the family bath, but at that moment he found himself thinking about his family and how they would feel afterwards. From his point of view that was a selfish answer to his problem, because, his father, mother, brother and sister would always feel that they didn’t do enough for him. That realization stopped him from taking his life. Still, he was worried about not truly experiencing and enjoying the life he has. He believed he would never find a job and true love. His father believed in him so much and explained the young Nick that every living being has a purpose, he just needed to find it. That encouraged him to do everything he wanted to do. Today he is a very happy and productive man with a great sense of houmour and a great deal of empathy for other people. I was so impressed with his way of thinking before he met Oprah.
You’re scared to meet Oprah! What’s she going to do, cut off your arms and legs! Wait, you’ve already lived more than twenty-five years and traveled the world without arms and legs. Oprah, I’m ready for you! Give me a hug!
Coping with problems
I find myself using his technique very often to overcome situations hat make me nervous. I would tell a joke to my colleagues before a difficult exam to reduce the dose of nervousness both to them and to myself.
At the beginning of the book, Nick wrote about praying to God to give him at least one arm and one leg and falling asleep full of hope that God would listen to his prayers. After some time he realized that such things happen only to main characters of animated shows and that he needed to change his strategy. At that time he asked God to show him the path he should follow in his life and to give him the strength needed to deal with all the problems of his life. Shortly after that, he began to speak and motivate people on stage. Instead of giving up, he decided to surf the giant life wave.
His way of coping with problems is at least impressive. With the faith in God and his divine plan, he set his mind on succeeding in life and overcoming his problem by transforming it into his strength.
After reading the book, I was inspired and felt like I too, can make a difference for the humanity. I believe that this book should be read by everyone, because a lot of people feel burdened by the problems they face in their lives and accept them, without thinking about the way to overcome them. Nick Vujicic is a truly impressive and inspirational man. I bow down to you, Nick!
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground Control to Major Tom (ten, nine, eight, seven, six)
Commencing countdown, engines on (five, four, three)
Check ignition and may God’s love be with you (two, one, liftoff)
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare
“This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much she knows
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you “Here am I floating ’round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do”
After almost 2 months of doing nothing on internet I decided to make some changes to channel. This changes are everything but not new idea, when I started this channel called Daan Miles main thought was to make it about things that are happening in my life and things that inspire my work. Videos that you probably watched for last 2 years are mostly about Blender. As I mentioned in my videos 3D modeling is my side job and lately I don’t have enough of time to do some work that I want to share with you. But, I don’t want to give up from 3D modeling and making tutorials for you. After I got so much positive feedback from you it would be very selfish to not make “one” more tutorial.
So, what is new?
Changes that are coming to channel are already in my intro video, if you go there right now you can hear me talking about Linux and some other things that I will upload. All that “other stuff” didn’t find way to my channel mostly because of my bad English skills, so I created a lot of short and easy to pronounce content. Eventually, my English improved enormously in last two years. From the man who can barely make 300 words essay in a day I transformed to a nerd which can make 5 A4 pages in one sitting. My main focus now is improving talking skills. The best way to do this is to make collaboration videos with some of you. VLOGs and bigger tutorials are coming to channel when I get new microphone which will allow me to make better content for all of you.
One big part of my life now is traveling and photographing. I bought Cannon DSLR camera and on my channel there are two videos made with that camera. Reason for them sitting in that “private” part of my channel is bad lightning in my room. I am planning to move to the new apartment in next 3 months, main focus of me picking that apartment will be big amount of daily light.
I finished big amount of projects in last 4-5 years of my Blender career, and today I have like hundreds of models just laying down in these projects. So I decided to give them some use by selling them in asset store. Main part of them (90%) will be very cheap (1$-2$) and if you subscribe to my channel/blog you will get a lot of coupons. To be honest with you, a lot of them worth more than price presented on store. I decided to sell them cheaply because of people who are just starting Blender journey and don’t want/have to spend a lot of money on assets. Process of adding assets to store is a little bit slow mainly because I want to make them as good as possible before I sell it to you.
If you like channel updates that are coming leave me a comment, and of course if you don’t like them do the same. I really want to hear some feedback from you. Živjeli!
Draining your batteries every day because of work but seeing very little concrete evidence of time that you are spending can be really frustrating. Simple solution to this problem can’t be found in some book. But, looking from my experience I usually spend money from my work on some things that I don’t really need. It is not that hard to go in shopping mall right after getting your money on plastic card and spend good amount of it on random things.
2 months ago I started using monefy app for tracking my money. The result was pretty surprising to me. While looking at results on the phone I didn’t believe myself, I spend more than a 75% of my budget on eating out and shopping. That is clearly very bad decision that costs me a lot of bucks. After spending some nights looking for solution to this problem I came up with few of them.
Stop boredom eating
Changing McDonalds cheeseburger for something healthy can improve health and save few bucks. It is easy to store some fruits in a fridge for moments of boredom. Screen time typically raises the chance for boredom eating. However, Netflix time does not have to be excuse for calling fast food. It is easy to replace jumbo pizza with traditional snacks which are actually healthy and cheap (popcorn/mixed nuts).
A bit more of cooking at home
This will not only improve my health but it will also improve finances! Eating meals at home will cut food budget dramatically. If I prepare healthy meal for my self at home it is like 5-6 dollars per meal, to get exact same meal at some restaurant I need to spend double or triple.
Most importantly in this way I can choose size of a meal for lunch or dinner. Here in Croatia prices are same for lunches and dinners, and there is no any differences between sizes of meal. For some of you this can be a little bit weird because I know that a lot of American and British restaurants have different sizes for different time of a day. This is some kind of double win for me, I reduce spending and getting control about sizes of portions.
Not rich enough to buy cheap things
This piece of spending “pie” is not that hard to control. To be honest, I have a big problem buying a lot of things on e-bay (Amazon pays big shipping costs for Croatia right now). It is not like I buy to much of them, it is like buying a lot of things which don’t work in the first place. I spend so much money buying T-shirts, shoes and gadgets which broke almost the same day when I got them in mail box. As you can guess, I need to pay for the same thing one more time and that is my friend losing money!
Living in small town is great place to reduce “public transport” costs. A lot of time I call Uber or taxi just because I am lazy to go home walking. Again, this is double win, it is healthy and will save some money for more important things.
Do you have some more ideas for saving money? If you do, tell me in comments I will gladly read about them!
A show with one of the best intros I’ve ever seen. Right of the bat, the entire 80s hit you so hard that you don’t know what happened to you. It has everything from corporate intrigue, personal rivalry, clashing visions, and historic technological developments. After watching pilot episode, I was hooked so much that I bought all 3 seasons and waited for a free weekend to watch it all in one sitting.
Believe me, I watched entire season of Game of Thrones in one day but for this time I am talking about series which I am still watching almost every day. Halt and catch fire present every aspect of tech industry in that time. A lot of folks work themselves to death for something new, something different or some new technology. (more…)
Most valuable resource that you have is ticking on your watch while you are eating cereals, doing dishes, enjoying sport game or having business conversation. Our time on this planet is limited and probably we are not aware of it at all. If you look at old books you will probably find an old adage “you can’t manage what you can’t measure” and it stands true today more than ever before. And, speaking of today, at 21. century it is easiest thing to waste. (more…)
The difference between doing things fast/spontaneously and doing them calm/on schedule can be seen on every object that I make. Whenever I start making something right after watching youtube video, or while I am studying for my college degree I get bad looking model which is probably not only bed looking but also very bad modeled. From my experience I found helpful to make 15 minute break before I start making anything. So, these are my habits before opening Blender.
Make some coffee
Lately, I am not some big fan of coffee. But one Nescafe can be great distraction from anything what you have been doing before you start thinking of modeling. It is fast and easy to make, I can “brew” one in only 2-3 minutes and usually the smell of it gives me even more motivation to do things in the right way. Knowing that I have cup of hot beverage on my desk is just great.
Clean your desk
Whatever I am doing before modeling needs to go away. I like to have clean and well lighted desk in front of me. Sometimes it is harder to clean my desk than to animate some model, especially because I use to eat on it (I know… Not very great habit). Monitor, speakers, keyboard, pen and notebook are only things that I need when modeling, nothing less nothing more.
Turn up some music
This is one of these things that are must have. Some background noise can motivate me and it usually helps to lose sense of time. Lately, Parov Stelar is the one of the artist that I am listening while modeling. Good rhythm and great bass lines gives me a lot of fun. If you didn’t heard for him until now, my honest recommendation.
When I start modeling almost 5 years ago I just modeled everything from my head, and after a year or two I decided to buy grid notebook to sketch everything in it. I can check all scales to see does everything look good, and if I need to model something tomorrow or next week I can write notes to not lose my thoughts until then. It is timesaving device which will make your models look better almost instantly. Usually you will need more time to sketch something then 15 minutes but it is time well consumed.
That is it folks. This is how I spend 15 minutes before starting to model. As you can see this works pretty well for me, so if you have some of your habits that you want to share with me, feel free to leave a comment. I will be very happy to respond.
Every year, I make list of challenges to do in time in front of me, a lot of them finish in a trash can in corner of my apartment, but, you know, some of them like starting youtube channel and blog come to life. I don’t want to show the list of my 2016. resolutions because there is no need to lie, I failed a lot of them, so I decided to write a list for 2017. on my web to get a little more enthusiasm for making all of them. As you probably know, I am not a native English speaker so a lot of my wishes is pointed in direction to learn new languages and of course to improve my English.
