After almost 2 months of doing nothing on internet I decided to make some changes to channel. This changes are everything but not new idea, when I started this channel called Daan Miles main thought was to make it about things that are happening in my life and things that inspire my work. Videos that you probably watched for last 2 years are mostly about Blender. As I mentioned in my videos 3D modeling is my side job and lately I don’t have enough of time to do some work that I want to share with you. But, I don’t want to give up from 3D modeling and making tutorials for you. After I got so much positive feedback from you it would be very selfish to not make “one” more tutorial.
So, what is new?
Changes that are coming to channel are already in my intro video, if you go there right now you can hear me talking about Linux and some other things that I will upload. All that “other stuff” didn’t find way to my channel mostly because of my bad English skills, so I created a lot of short and easy to pronounce content. Eventually, my English improved enormously in last two years. From the man who can barely make 300 words essay in a day I transformed to a nerd which can make 5 A4 pages in one sitting. My main focus now is improving talking skills. The best way to do this is to make collaboration videos with some of you. VLOGs and bigger tutorials are coming to channel when I get new microphone which will allow me to make better content for all of you.
One big part of my life now is traveling and photographing. I bought Cannon DSLR camera and on my channel there are two videos made with that camera. Reason for them sitting in that “private” part of my channel is bad lightning in my room. I am planning to move to the new apartment in next 3 months, main focus of me picking that apartment will be big amount of daily light.
I finished big amount of projects in last 4-5 years of my Blender career, and today I have like hundreds of models just laying down in these projects. So I decided to give them some use by selling them in asset store. Main part of them (90%) will be very cheap (1$-2$) and if you subscribe to my channel/blog you will get a lot of coupons. To be honest with you, a lot of them worth more than price presented on store. I decided to sell them cheaply because of people who are just starting Blender journey and don’t want/have to spend a lot of money on assets. Process of adding assets to store is a little bit slow mainly because I want to make them as good as possible before I sell it to you.
If you like channel updates that are coming leave me a comment, and of course if you don’t like them do the same. I really want to hear some feedback from you. Živjeli!
Lately I swim a little bit more than usual, so I got idea to create fun animation with fluids (water) in Blender. This was a right time to learn something new because I didn’t use that fluid part of physics tab for a two years. I can tell you that I forgot everything what I knew about it. But after looking at a few tutorials I find some of them interesting. In this video you can see my result of animating fluid in Blender. It is just basic stuff, domain, inflow and obstacles. Of course, there is my water shader which is completely awesome if you ask me. To be honest, finished result shocked me very much and I was not disappointed at all. (more…)
The difference between doing things fast/spontaneously and doing them calm/on schedule can be seen on every object that I make. Whenever I start making something right after watching youtube video, or while I am studying for my college degree I get bad looking model which is probably not only bed looking but also very bad modeled. From my experience I found helpful to make 15 minute break before I start making anything. So, these are my habits before opening Blender.
Make some coffee
Lately, I am not some big fan of coffee. But one Nescafe can be great distraction from anything what you have been doing before you start thinking of modeling. It is fast and easy to make, I can “brew” one in only 2-3 minutes and usually the smell of it gives me even more motivation to do things in the right way. Knowing that I have cup of hot beverage on my desk is just great.
Clean your desk
Whatever I am doing before modeling needs to go away. I like to have clean and well lighted desk in front of me. Sometimes it is harder to clean my desk than to animate some model, especially because I use to eat on it (I know… Not very great habit). Monitor, speakers, keyboard, pen and notebook are only things that I need when modeling, nothing less nothing more.
Turn up some music
This is one of these things that are must have. Some background noise can motivate me and it usually helps to lose sense of time. Lately, Parov Stelar is the one of the artist that I am listening while modeling. Good rhythm and great bass lines gives me a lot of fun. If you didn’t heard for him until now, my honest recommendation.
When I start modeling almost 5 years ago I just modeled everything from my head, and after a year or two I decided to buy grid notebook to sketch everything in it. I can check all scales to see does everything look good, and if I need to model something tomorrow or next week I can write notes to not lose my thoughts until then. It is timesaving device which will make your models look better almost instantly. Usually you will need more time to sketch something then 15 minutes but it is time well consumed.
That is it folks. This is how I spend 15 minutes before starting to model. As you can see this works pretty well for me, so if you have some of your habits that you want to share with me, feel free to leave a comment. I will be very happy to respond.
I got idea from my youtube friend Joshua Autumn to make some kind of notebook, where I will show you process of making one of my models. I think this is good idea for everyone who is looking at finished projects and so often get confused how people get to that “Wow!” look from default cube. Few days earlier I got project where I need to show reconstruction of two old pillars from old town near my place. So, I needed some kind of laboratory to show what people who invest in that project are paying for.
Well that is enough of background story, let’s begin with our notes.
Day 1 – Basic measures of hangar
When starting project like this I don’t like to do everything in high definition at the start. I like to get something that looks good and can be very easy changed if I see any good reason for that. Today I finished walls and roof of hangar. Roof is supported by few metal beams and have big “windows” for letting sun goes in. I don’t use any texture in this process because I like to add them when I finish modeling part. What I learned from my experience is that it is easy to make good textures when you have good model of some building.
As you can see this is my model in early stage and for now I use aircraft that I found somewhere on BlendSwap to get good measure on my hangar.
Day 2 – Changing roof and lamps
Today I didn’t have a lot of time to spend on modeling. I switch curved roof to plane with holes to get some light come in scene. Actually, this is first time that I am using portals and I think that they are really helpful. I learned this technique some time ago from BlenderGuru tutorials and it works great. When you need to deal with light in interior scenes you get a lot of noise in images. That is big problem especially when you are not doing some hobby project. You need to deliver good and quality image if you think about getting new projects in future.
Upper image have identical number of samples like previous one. This is example of difference between using and not using portals for interior scenes.
Day 3 – Adding side windows and rearranging pillars
I think today I got final look of roof. Now it looks “real”. After adding side beams to roof and vertical to corners of hangar I decided that this room need more windows. It helped me to reduce amount of noise and to add more details on models. Don’t know what to do with roof windows yet, probably I will just make some texture on them to reduce amount of emission from them.
As you can see I added one more MIG just to increase power of this image XD. If you have any suggestions for roof you can give me comment I will be very happy to listen your advice.
Day 4 – Roof windows and side panels
Today I spent a lot of time dealing with roof windows. After I ask people what they think on reddit a lot of them told me to add “grills” like on the side windows, but turning off shadow option from cycles. After a little tweaking I got great effect and there is no increasing of render time at all. That give me idea to add some “ropes” on the sides, in that way all scene looks more interesting.
While adding ropes to the scene I realized that I didn’t add portals on side windows. After adding them I got much faster rendering, it reduced render time for 20%. If you ask me that is great deal for 30 seconds job.
Day 5 – Adding basic materials, changing steal layout and deleting airplanes
Almost 2 months I didn’t have time to do something constructive with this project. Finally I spend entire evening working on it, adding some materials to walls, roof, and ground(this part needs more work). I think that this is really close to the finished project, from my point of view I need to change color of all steal beams to make them a little more interesting.
Well, after looking it one more time, I really miss these airplanes. Probably bring them back in next work session.
Day 6 – Final touches
Almost a week long project is finally finished. I added garage door on the one side of the hangar and increased that light value a little. Some of you suggested me to change glossiness of the floor to something more interesting, because this one is pretty perfect. And well, you totally right. It looks so much better this way.
Enough of talking here are images:
That is it, tell me what you think in the comment section. Also, I will make this model available for buying on turbosquide in future. So if you want to know when it happens just leave me your email address.
When I created glowing glass first time in Blender, I was just speechless. It worked so good and so simply that I didn’t even know how it is possible. So as you can guess I played with parameters for long time to get them as good as they can be.
Today almost two years from that “event” I made tutorial about it. It is 2 minutes long, but I am so proud about it. Because of that I created blend file which you can buy on sellfy for only 1 dollar. It is good opportunity to anyone out there who wants to support my work. (more…)
Hello guys, I didn’t post anything for a long time. But, tuday I have new 1 minute tutorial. In this one I will show you how to make safety ring which will follow movement of the ocean. You can use this method wherever you want. If you think about it you can use boats, submarines, little plastic ducks etc. instead of safety ring so the possibilities are unlimited. This is the first time that I am making my Blend file available to all of you, and I will make it affordable as much as I can. If you prefer free version, let’s watch tutorial and learn how to do it.
In this tutorial you will learn how to use constraits, especially copy location, copy rotation and follow path. After that I will show you how to use shrinkwrap, and ocean modifier. I hope this will be fun experience and that you will learn some new things. (more…)
What to do when you have 10 minutes of spare time? Of course, you can drink cup of coffee or tea, but sometimes you need to unleash that artist soul in yourself. Today I decided to make loop video/gif of default cube. It is not my best work, but in a last month, I spend so little time in Blender that anything is better than nothing. In future there will be more “little” projects like this. This is something that help me to reduce stress in a very bussy day.
There is no easy way to introduce this man, for me, he represents new kind of youtube tutors. His videos are short, simple, but don’t get me wrong, even if you are intermediate Blender user you will find something to learn in each video. When I got new notification in my subscription box on youtube, I always hope that Josh Autumn uploaded something, so if you didn’t, here is link to his channel, you will not regret if you go there.
