The difference between doing things fast/spontaneously and doing them calm/on schedule can be seen on every object that I make. Whenever I start making something right after watching youtube video, or while I am studying for my college degree I get bad looking model which is probably not only bed looking but also very bad modeled. From my experience I found helpful to make 15 minute break before I start making anything. So, these are my habits before opening Blender.
Make some coffee
Lately, I am not some big fan of coffee. But one Nescafe can be great distraction from anything what you have been doing before you start thinking of modeling. It is fast and easy to make, I can “brew” one in only 2-3 minutes and usually the smell of it gives me even more motivation to do things in the right way. Knowing that I have cup of hot beverage on my desk is just great.
Clean your desk
Whatever I am doing before modeling needs to go away. I like to have clean and well lighted desk in front of me. Sometimes it is harder to clean my desk than to animate some model, especially because I use to eat on it (I know… Not very great habit). Monitor, speakers, keyboard, pen and notebook are only things that I need when modeling, nothing less nothing more.
Turn up some music
This is one of these things that are must have. Some background noise can motivate me and it usually helps to lose sense of time. Lately, Parov Stelar is the one of the artist that I am listening while modeling. Good rhythm and great bass lines gives me a lot of fun. If you didn’t heard for him until now, my honest recommendation.
When I start modeling almost 5 years ago I just modeled everything from my head, and after a year or two I decided to buy grid notebook to sketch everything in it. I can check all scales to see does everything look good, and if I need to model something tomorrow or next week I can write notes to not lose my thoughts until then. It is timesaving device which will make your models look better almost instantly. Usually you will need more time to sketch something then 15 minutes but it is time well consumed.

I got idea from my youtube friend Joshua Autumn to make some kind of notebook, where I will show you process of making one of my models. I think this is good idea for everyone who is looking at finished projects and so often get confused how people get to that “Wow!” look from default cube. Few days earlier I got project where I need to show reconstruction of two old pillars from old town near my place. So, I needed some kind of laboratory to show what people who invest in that project are paying for.
Well that is enough of background story, let’s begin with our notes.
Day 1 – Basic measures of hangar
When starting project like this I don’t like to do everything in high definition at the start. I like to get something that looks good and can be very easy changed if I see any good reason for that. Today I finished walls and roof of hangar. Roof is supported by few metal beams and have big “windows” for letting sun goes in. I don’t use any texture in this process because I like to add them when I finish modeling part. What I learned from my experience is that it is easy to make good textures when you have good model of some building.
As you can see this is my model in early stage and for now I use aircraft that I found somewhere on BlendSwap to get good measure on my hangar.
Day 2 – Changing roof and lamps
Today I didn’t have a lot of time to spend on modeling. I switch curved roof to plane with holes to get some light come in scene. Actually, this is first time that I am using portals and I think that they are really helpful. I learned this technique some time ago from BlenderGuru tutorials and it works great. When you need to deal with light in interior scenes you get a lot of noise in images. That is big problem especially when you are not doing some hobby project. You need to deliver good and quality image if you think about getting new projects in future.
Upper image have identical number of samples like previous one. This is example of difference between using and not using portals for interior scenes.
Day 3 – Adding side windows and rearranging pillars
I think today I got final look of roof. Now it looks “real”. After adding side beams to roof and vertical to corners of hangar I decided that this room need more windows. It helped me to reduce amount of noise and to add more details on models. Don’t know what to do with roof windows yet, probably I will just make some texture on them to reduce amount of emission from them.
As you can see I added one more MIG just to increase power of this image XD. If you have any suggestions for roof you can give me comment I will be very happy to listen your advice.
Day 4 – Roof windows and side panels
Today I spent a lot of time dealing with roof windows. After I ask people what they think on reddit a lot of them told me to add “grills” like on the side windows, but turning off shadow option from cycles. After a little tweaking I got great effect and there is no increasing of render time at all. That give me idea to add some “ropes” on the sides, in that way all scene looks more interesting.
While adding ropes to the scene I realized that I didn’t add portals on side windows. After adding them I got much faster rendering, it reduced render time for 20%. If you ask me that is great deal for 30 seconds job.
Day 5 – Adding basic materials, changing steal layout and deleting airplanes
Almost 2 months I didn’t have time to do something constructive with this project. Finally I spend entire evening working on it, adding some materials to walls, roof, and ground(this part needs more work). I think that this is really close to the finished project, from my point of view I need to change color of all steal beams to make them a little more interesting.
Well, after looking it one more time, I really miss these airplanes. Probably bring them back in next work session.
Day 6 – Final touches
Almost a week long project is finally finished. I added garage door on the one side of the hangar and increased that light value a little. Some of you suggested me to change glossiness of the floor to something more interesting, because this one is pretty perfect. And well, you totally right. It looks so much better this way.

A lot of scenes that I make in a last time need some kind of rope. After looking through the internet I didn’t find anything simple and good looking so I decided to make it on my own. After a few hours of trying and failing this is my final result. I am pretty happy about it. After you make it few times you will have knowledge to make any possible rope in 1 or 2 minutes. (more…)
