As you probably know from my previous posts I am big Linux enthusiast so it will be hard for me to stay objective on this topic. As we often see in Linux community better and bigger projects always finish with port for Windows. We saw this houndred of times and I think that we are pretty used to that.

Lightroom or die

Now back on the topic. I start using Lightroom before 3 years and it was one of the best things that happened in my photography hobby. I didn’t need to open Photoshop and overcomplicate everything. It let me to focus on my photos, not on “How to do this?”. After a while I found my self forgetting Photoshop and doing everything with LightRoom. It was easy and simple. Everything what I need was 2 clicks away from me, and if I didn’t know how to do something, there are planty of tutorials out there. Let’s be honest it was best software that I tried that year.

After paragraph like this, you may ask me why even bother with darktable then? Short answer to this is that I start using ubuntu in that time. Firstly, only for surfing and listening music but after some time as main OS. To be honest for me in that time Ubuntu had big flaw. It didn’t have Photoshop and Lightroom. Of course there was way to install them with Wine or playonLinux but for me that was not the option.

Darktable as an alternative

So, what to do. I started searching on google for solution. Darktable looked like unfinished project on the first sight. But I installed it and start moving all of sliders to see what it can do to image. I found out that images imported and exported from darktable give a little bit darker results but that is difference that you see only looking to booth of the programs in the same time. After using it for more than a month I become “fluent” to use only darktable in my work.

What is difference?

Well if you ask me, both of them can deliver great images, and you will not find any big advantage on any of them. After that we must look at price tag. You can get darktable for free from their website. For lightroom you will need to spend around 80 bucks, so it is obvious decision if you are short on money. But, on the other hand, you can’t install darktable on windows. That is problem which will be solved very soon. As people from darktable website says, if there is someone willing to port it for windows, there is no any obstacle to do it.
